Everybody searches for the best air conditioner in India or the best ac brand in India. However in our opinion, before deciding on purchasing an air conditioner for your house or office, you must first know how much tonnage is required for your space. You should do a rough calculation of the size of the room where you want to install the air conditioner or the tonnage required for your enclosed space. This can also be done by using the method of BTS:
= area of the room in sq. ft. X 30 (or 40 depending on which floor the room is in and the sunlight the room gets from the roof or the two other sides)
Other factors such as the number of people in the room, the number of windows in the room, etc. affect BTS. Please note that for every additional person in the room, add 600 BTUs and an additional 10% if the temperature of your city rises above 40 degrees or if the room in which the AC is being installed is sunny.
The BTU that you get must be compared with the BTU power supplied by different ACs. Given below is the list of BTU of the different tonnage of ACs:
Tonnage of AC | BTU/ hour (Power) |
1 | 12000 |
1.5 | 18000 |
2 | 24000 |
For an easier way, please refer to the table below:
Condition | 1 Ton | 1.5 Ton | 2 Ton |
Temperature > 40 degrees in the city | Room size 100 sq. ft. maximum but avoid if the room gets a lot of sunlight | Room size less than 140 sq. ft. | Room size within 180 sq. ft. |
The maximum temperature in your city is < 30 degrees | Room size below 100 sq. ft. | Room size below 150 sq. ft. | Room size within 200 sq. ft. |
Temperature > 40 degrees in the city + you’re having a small party of over 10 people | Not advisable | Not advisable | Room size under 200 sq. ft. |
The maximum temperature in your city is < 35 degrees + you’re affirmative that the AC will keep the room cool with a small party | Not advisable | Room size below 120 sq. ft. | Room size within 160 sq. ft. |
Next, you must be well informed about the types of AC available in the market. Each of the brands mentioned above manufactures different types of AC. Here we will discuss two types of air conditioners.
